About Alpharetta, GA
Alpharetta, GA..."Where old south hospitality and new south imagination come together"
Founded along a Cherokee Indian trail, the city of Alpharetta was incorporated December 11, 1858. The town became the county seat of the former Milton County, which merged into Fulton County in 1932. The name Alpharetta is a variation of a fictional Indian girl "Alpharetta" in a 19th century song, The Blue Juniata, but is also said to be from the Greek meaning “first town.”
Nestled in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains, yet easily accessible to Atlanta and its many attractions, Alpharetta offers residents the best of both worlds. Some of the many things to see and do are world-class shopping at North Point Mall and the many antique and specialty shops in Historic Downtown Alpharetta; biking or jogging in the 6.15 mile long Big Creek Greenway; or take a short trip to the North Georgia mountains for a hike on the Appalachian Trail.
Many high-tech, white-collar and international businesses are drawn to Alpharetta. Some well known companies include Hewlett-Packard, UPS Supply Chain Solutions, Radiant Systems, NetBank, Lucent, Nortel, IBM, Sun Microsystems, AT&T, Siemens, Verizon, Verizon Wireless, Alltel, E*Trade, Hansgrohe, and ChoicePoint.
Alpharetta is served by 15 elementary schools, seven middle schools and four high schools. It’s public schools consistently win awards for the high quality of education they provide: both high schools were named among the top 13 in the state of Georgia, and one was recently named a state School of Excellence. Residence of Alpharetta also have access to higher education, ranging from the Alpharetta campus of DeVry University and Keller Graduate School of Management to the many universities and colleges in the Atlanta area. The famous Georgia Tech ranks among the top engineering schools in the country.
What sets Alpharetta apart from most Atlanta area suburbs is the diversity of real estate that ranges from lavish equestrian estates, country clubs, luxury homes and golf/swim/tennis communities, to new and modern townhomes that are walking distance from the historic downtown square, in addition to first time home buyer neighborhoods.
