About Ball Ground, GA
Ball Ground, which is located approximately 50 miles north of Atlanta in Cherokee County, is a charming North Georgia community of almost 1,000 residents. The town lies at the base of the lower Appalachian foothills and offers pristine woodlands, beautiful lakes and convenient access to Atlanta. Served by excellent Interstate roadways, the Georgia Northeastern Railroad, and the Cherokee County Airport, businesses have convenient and efficient access to multiple transport modes.
The area was originally inhabited by Cherokee Indians, who were forced into the western frontier as settlers began to claim the land between 1790 and 1830. Before the railroad came through in 1882, Ball Ground was almost purely agricultural, consisting of a few dwellings and 2 country stores. The next major event that helped shape Ball Ground was the result of the marble-working industry. Today, Ball Ground is growing as businesses and homeowners are pushing into the North Georgia mountains along the I-575 corridor. The community boasts a number of new subdivisions and light industry. According to the 2005 census data, Cherokee county ranked the fifth fastest growing counties in Georgia.
The Ball Ground area offers plenty of things to see and do including tasting local wines at Sharp Mountain Vineyards & Winery; taking a drive to Burnt Mountain overlook for some breathtaking views of the North Georgia mountains; learning about Ball Ground’s rich history at Nelson Marble Museum; horseback riding and mountain biking on miles of wilderness trails; hiking all or parts of the 2,174 mile long Appalachian Trail and so much more! With so much to offer it’s no wonder why Cherokee County is one of the fastest growing counties in Georgia!
