Dahlonega
is best known as the location of the 1st major gold strike in the
United States. Before the California gold rush in 1849, gold fever
descended upon the local streams, creeks and rivers where many gold
paners and gold miners struck it rich. You can relive the gold rush
days at Dahlonega’s Gold Museum, located in downtown Dahlonega. Dahlonega
is also well recognized as the "Heart of Georgia Wine Country." due to
having the highest concentration of of wineries and vineyards in North
Georgia. Visitors to area vineyards can experience wine tastings,
vineyard tours, festivals and events at Frogtown Cellars, Three
Sisters, Wolf Mountain and Blackstock Vineyards & Wineries.
Dahlonega
is the quintessential Mayberry town. Stop at the downtown visitor
center to get oriented, and then head out to the many local shops that
feature fine work of local artisans, gift shops, antique shops, jewelry
stores and fine dining.
If hiking or trout fishing is your
thing, Dahlonega aims to please! Some of the finest trout streams and
hiking trails in the South are within a short 30 minute drive of
downtown. Some well know streams are the Etowah River, Jones Creek,
Nimbelewill Creek, Waters Creek, Cooper Creek and Dicks Creek.
Dahlonega’s area hiking trails are numerous, including the Appalachian
Trail, which begins at Springer Mountain, just north of Amicalola Falls
State Park. From here, you can hike all the ways to Maine, or take the
14 mile round trip hike from Amicalola Falls to the top of Springer
Mountain and back again. Dahlonega truly is a hikers paradise!

fishing, tubing and canoing on one of Dahlonega’s many lakes, rivers
and streams, including Lake Lanier which is only a short drive from the city of
Dahlonega. Over 30 waterfalls also lie within a short drive, including
Amicolola, the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi River. It’s no
