About Ellijay, GA
Ellijay, located about 80 miles north of Atlanta in Gilmer County, became the county seat in 1834. Prospecting for gold and logging lead to the arrival of the iron rail in the latter 1800s. Today, Ellijay is a quaint town filled with antique shops, galleries, dining, a variety of lodging and brimming with historical sites and architecture.
Ellijay is best known for being the Apple Capital of Georgia. The North Georgia mountain terrain and cool summer climate makes for ideal growing conditions for apples, and you'll find plenty of them here! Ellijay is home to the Georgia Apple Festival in October, where over 300 vendors with hand-crafted items, as well as apple picking, apple cider and homemade apple pies can be found!
The Ellijay area is a land diverse in outdoor recreation. The Cohutta Wilderness Area consists of 36,977 acres within the 95,265 acre Cohutta Wildlife Management area, making the Cohutta the third largest wilderness in the eastern United States. The Rich Mountain Wilderness contains 13,276 acres of primitive back country and wilderness, great for the rugged backpack adventure. Carter’s Lake provides water recreation while area mountain streams and trails draw visitors year ’round. Travel 20 miles southeast of town and you will find Amicalola Falls State Park. Here you will find 729-foot Amicalola Falls, one of the largest set of waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. From Amicalola State Park, you can also hike 8.5 miles to Springer Mountain, the southern most end of the world-renowned Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail extends over 2,000 miles north to Mount Katahdin in Maine!
Ellijay is where winter is a mountain top dusted with snow; spring is a hillside layered with apple blossoms; summer is a valley sprinkled with wildflowers; and fall is a mountain side covered with a patchwork quilt of multicolored leaves. Come spend a day, a week, or a lifetime!
