Gainesville is the seat and the hub of business and industry, retail, medicine, recreation and education for northeast Georgia. The city is filled with shops, restaurants, public and private schools and universities, health care professionals and much more.
Lake Lanier, with its 540-miles of shoreline, is a favorite recreational site with golf courses, an Olympic training center, a water park, horseback riding trails and campgrounds. It is best known for its trophy striped bass fishery. There are many striper guides in the area if you are new to the sport. Other places of interest in Gainesville include the Elachee Nature Science Center, the Georgia Mountain Museum and the Northeast Georgia History Center at Brenau University.
The city is also home to Gainesville College, a member of the University System of Georgia, and Brenau University, which offers a private four-year woman's college and a college preparatory school, Brenau Academy.
Gainesville has a subtropical climate with mild winters and warm summers. Winter temperatures average in the 50’s, while summer temperatures average a pleasant 85ºF. Gainesville residents experience all four seasons, although winter rarely brings more than an inch of snow.
